"The very first time I worked with a participant at a Look Good Feel Better workshop holds a special place in my heart. The participant had arrived quite tense and agitated. At the very end of the session, her parting words resonated with me. She recounted that she had just had chemo and was not feeling her best today so she was planning not to come. However, she was so thankful that she decided to come as the workshop was not only informative but also the Look Good Feel Better volunteers really helped brighten her mood. This memory is a reminder for me that I may not be able to take someone's pain away but by maintaining a positive attitude, I can make their experience a little brighter.
The Look Good Feel Better community is absolutely phenomenal and so supportive. These workshops not only provide women affected by cancer with the tools to regain control over their appearance but also a safe space for them to recount their experiences. It is so rewarding to see women have a positive experience during these trying times and to see these women support each other within the workshop and beyond."
"My favorite memory, and pretty much every workshop has the same effect, is seeing all the women struggling with their diagnosis all grinning from ear to ear - so very happy with their experience, both from their makeup and the wonderful job PMH Wig Shop does! They are so appreciative of the Workshop and all the great tips, not to mention, all the wonderful products Look Good Feel Better Program provides!
I would tell anyone thinking about volunteering for The LGFB Program that it is very, very rewarding. I always feel extremely fulfilled after a workshop. I have actually gone through the Workshop myself as a patient at PMH in 2014. That was my inspiration!"
"It is a privilege to serve the courageous women that attend our workshops. I can’t say that I have one particular favorite moment as a LGFB volunteer, mostly it’s seeing the changes in the participants during the workshops. Many women may be a bit shy, tentative and unsure when they walk in the door, however, by the time the workshop ends, they are smiling with confidence. They've been able to chat with new friends, making more connections and they’ve had fun! They are so appreciative of our wonderful LGFB program and the volunteers! I am SO inspired by their strength, courage & grace!
I have a Zen Proverb hanging in my office, it says “If you want happiness, help someone” That’s exactly how I feel about LGFB!"
"When a co-worker of mine was diagnosed with cancer and she came to me for advise, I urged her to sign up for a workshop. Which she thankfully did! It is this workshop that is ingrained forever in my memory as one of my favourite workshops. She arrived a little late with her mother as her support, and the participants encouraged her to be the model. I was blessed to be able to provide her instruction, demo the tools in the kits provided and make her feel beautiful. It is amazing to see the participants come in quietly and/or nervous and then leave the workshop smiling and with their heads held high. Later that evening she posted photos on social media beaming about LGFB and feeling thankful for attending.
I am so proud to be a small part of LGFB, especially the volunteer group of women I am privileged to deliver these workshops with. I too feel supported by these woman that I have established relationships with over the years, even though we are there to support the participants! Additionally, I have even been able to attend other events like fundraisers, galas and WinkDay celebrations!"
"The ladies are rather quiet or timid as they arrive for the LGFB workshop. My favourite memory is to see the renewed confidence that the participants have at the end of the workshop. The workshop provides an opportunity to bring women together in a supportive community where they can connect with one another and feel less alone.
As a volunteer, I think that I gain as much from the workshops as the participants do. I admire their courage, determination and optimism as they face cancer, and I feel privileged to have helped them. I would encourage anyone to become a volunteer - 100%"
"My favorite memory as a Look Good Feel Better Volunteer is watching the transformation of each participant from the moment they walk in the door, not really sure what to expect, they have a look of concern or the unknown or, "gosh, there are a lot of people!" When they leave, they have pep in their step, they have new friends, new knowledge, they have a renewed faith in their journey and ‘new cosmetics’ in a beautiful purple tote. I love to watch them grow during our time together.
I would tell anyone thinking of volunteering to join us monthly to give your time, your cosmetic wisdom, your comfort to women going through cancer treatment. My promise to you would be that you will receive so much more in return, than the time you spend monthly. Giving is such a rewarding experience."
"What I love about volunteering with the Look Good Feel Better program is being the hub of the creation of some really great friendships. People going through cancer treatment don’t need to feel alone and a lot of times in these workshops women meet other women and become lifelong friends. It just warms my heart that I am a part of bringing those people together.
It’s very rewarding to help women build confidence, and encourage them to feel a little bit more like themselves again. I’m so thankful to be a part of such a wonderful group and I hope with what’s going on in the world today that we will be able to get back to creating these wonderful workshop gatherings and sharing healthy tips for women still facing these challenges."
"One evening as usual participants arrived and the evening proceeded as normal - and what a fun night it was. As the evening drew to a close there was one woman who discovered the session by total accident. So very surprised, amazed and disappointed she hadn't known about LGFB sooner. However, by the end of the session she made new friends - overpoweringly thankful and appreciative to all the volunteers for sharing priceless time with sick women.
I always look forward to our monthly gatherings, even though I may be exhausted - not only to meeting participants but seeing all the volunteers – we are like family. I feel very honoured to have befriended these women of quality – I hope to remain an important part of this team for many years to come."
"What I remember the most are smiling faces, participants chatting with new found "cancer journey" friends and being thanked for the Look Good Feel Better workshops.
To someone thinking of joining I'd say...join Look Good Feel Better with the willingness to share your knowledge with women and teens going through cancer and it's physical side effects but be prepared to be in AWE of their courage and resilience."
"I have no one favourite memory. I love the smiles and thank you hugs we volunteers receive after each workshop. Makes our time truly worthwhile. We really make a positive difference in a woman's life. It's easy and has an uplifting impact on you and the women who you help at the workshop."
"My favorite memory in my time as a Look Good Feel Better volunteer would be the way I felt after one of my first sessions. My expectations were completely exceeded. It started off by a warm welcome from the volunteers. I couldn't believe the amount of dedication and talent in that room. I also remember going up in front of everyone to start the Hair Alternative portion extremely nervous, then looking around and seeing all of the beautiful faces that were just made up. By the end of the session, we were laughing and having fun trying on different wigs and styles. It was safe place for women to be themselves with no judgement, We were all learning together and it just felt so right to be there.
Being a part of such a wonderful community has been so rewarding. I have met the most remarkable people- both volunteers and participants. Being able to give back to women using my skillset is an honour. We should be proud of what we do and share our knowledge to make someone feel better or more comfortable during a hard time in their lives."
"My favourite memory of being a LGFB volunteer was when a participant approached me after the workshop to give me a big hug and told me that we lifted her spirits and brought some sunshine into her life after being diagnosed. This is why I volunteer, to bring joy and a feel good energy through our workshops. I love seeing the participants speak amongst each other, if they feel comfortable, and sharing their stories and experiences with one another.
It is such a great feeling to give back and to share our skills with women going through hard times emotionally and physically. I always say that I walk away from these workshops feeling great myself knowing that I helped these women with the effects of cancer and treatments, teaching them steps and techniques to take home. Seeing their smiling faces at the end of the workshops brings so much joy to my heart."
"I have many favourite experiences in my 18 years. It’s hard to pick just one, and they most always had to do with the eyebrows of all things! People sometimes don’t see until the eyebrows are done what a difference it makes to the shape of the face, and it just lights them up. Being a LGFB volunteer is one of the most rewarding things you can do there is no better reward than to know you’re helping someone to feel so good about themselves when they look in the mirror. That for those brief few moments they forget about everything else and just feel good! I am 18 years in and don’t plan to stop.”
"The memories that stick with me are the sounds. At the beginning, it’s pretty quiet. Our ladies are busy assessing their cosmetic kits. The only chatter is us, the volunteers. The noise level picks up as the interaction increases. There’s laughter. By the end and goodbyes, it’s downright noisy. Many have made connections. Smiles are everywhere. And when we have packed up to leave, there’s usually a group out in the hall still talking. It makes us smile. It's really uplifting to see a woman regaining control of her appearance and finding her self confidence."
"A few years ago, we had a younger participant who I recognized from the community. I knew she was a mother of 2 young children. My initial thought when she came in with her companion was that she looked unsure about the situation she was walking into. As the night went on, side conversations were starting amongst the ladies as stories and jokes were shared. Needless to say, our younger participant had jumped right in and was wholeheartedly welcomed into the group - both learning from the ladies and teaching them a thing or two. By the end of the night she had everyone in stitches with her bold, sassy outlook on her upcoming journey. She was definitely a breath of fresh air for not only the participants, but the volunteers too... reminding us all how important it was to still laugh and have fun, even during the worst of times.
It is truly a rewarding experience to be able to spend a few hours a month with my fantastic team, working with a group of ladies going through probably the scariest time in their life. To see how the energy in the room transforms and how each participant forms connections at the table is the reason I volunteer. Knowing that I have given them a few hours to focus on helping them look good and feel better during their journey, with lots of tips and a couple of jokes thrown in is incredibly satisfying."
"I am thrilled to be nominated for my work with Look Good Feel Better. I have been a passionate team leader for almost 25 years! I have so many wonderful memories...every workshop is unique.
As it is impossible to be in their shoes...you must try with all of your heart. Read the room--be sensitive, listen closely, speak carefully. Be thankful for the opportunity to help and always remember to thank every workshop volunteer. I am one of the luckiest women I know: I have lived and worked, volunteered and served in the same community my entire life. My passion for leading Look Good Feel Better workshops has only grown over the years and it is my hope to lead for another 25 years!"
"I am truly honored to be nominated for this recognition. I have many wonderful memories from my time volunteering but this one made me feel really good. A participant said she hadn't worn makeup in years but after the workshop she in now inspired to have a proper skin care routine and apply a bit of makeup when she goes out. She had an appointment after the workshop and felt really good while she was there, despite her thinning hair.
As a volunteer you see women at different stages of cancer and treatment. It is such a gratifying feeling to know that you can help someone step away from their challenges for a couple of hours and just have some time for themselves."
"In my years as a team leader with LGFB, every workshop has its great memories, there is such a difference in the attitudes of the participants from the start of class to the finish, it gives me a happy heart. The glow on their faces is very uplifting, it is their time to relax and be in the company of women having the same experience. Most recently, we had a participant who, as most women, was upset about her hair loss. When it came time for the wig demonstration we tried a wig on her and she immediately started to tear up, it took years off her face she felt like herself again. That's what makes the memories.
Being a part of this great team is a wonderful way to give back to the community. We are women helping women look and feel there best. This puts things in perspective and I think you would be an asset to the team."
"We had a participant once that shared, in confidence, with me that she had been hesitant to come to a workshop as her diagnosis of cancer had her just having radiation at the time and had not lost her hair. She was so grateful for attending as she felt validated. She loved that she met other women who had felt the same.
We are all called to serve. Being a Look Good Feel Better volunteers allows you to put some "pretty" in the face of a not so pretty diagnosis and helping women feel like themselves again!"
"This is lovely to be recognized. However, in Hamilton it is our fearless leader Chris Piuni that dots all the I's and crosses all the T's to each and every workshop, and makes sure all bases are covered so our participants receive a wonderful time and learn and share lots. I feel blessed the ladies participating are so open to share their situations and trust us in such a short period of time."
What I receive as a volunteer is the respect and admiration for my sister volunteers and mostly for our participants. I walk away with pride at the end of each workshop. That at least for this day, for a few hours, she can escape, be good to herself, enjoy the moment, smile and be proud of how she looks!"
"Every workshop is special. As participants enter into the room with an unsure look then leave with smiles, laughter and sometimes even a bounce! That's always a great memory. I especially remember when a participant came up to me at the end of the workshop and said, “thank you so much. I’m so glad I came. I almost didn’t. This has been a terrific ending to a horrendous week.“ That always reminds me of how important the workshops are and the difference the volunteers make.
Being a LGFB volunteer is one of the most empowering experiences, for myself and the participants that attend the workshops. We can really make a difference in someone’s life. Our involvement is one of the most rewarding, worthwhile, feel good experiences in our life. By helping someone look good and feel more like themselves, we can really make them feel better."
"I have been a volunteer with LGFB for almost twenty years. Over this period of time I have had many rewarding experiences. One such experience was of an older participant, who attended one of our workshops. She had recently married a high school sweetheart after having been widowed for a few years. Her and her new husband loved to dance, walk, travel and were extremely happy. However, she was devastated because shortly after her marriage she was diagnosed with cancer. She was quickly losing her hair, her eyebrows and she was pale. As the workshop progressed we could see her mood shift. She paid close attention to the tips we provided especially on pencilling an eyebrow, and applying blush. When the hair alternative specialist fitted her with a wig she exclaimed, ‘’I can’t wait for my husband to see me!’’ She then burst into tears, she was so happy. This was just one of many rewarding experiences in my involvement with LGFB.
There are so many rewards being a part of a very dedicated LGFB team! To all LGFB volunteers everywhere I want to say: thank you!"
"Every time we have a group of ladies together for LGFB, there are always some moments along the way that stay with me for awhile. Every time we finish our time together it always warms my heart when you see the beautiful smiles that weren’t there when they arrived to start the session.
Being a LGFB volunteer is the most rewarding thing I have ever done - no words to describe how good “my soul” feels when I leave there."
"My favourite memory of LGFB would be when they arrive unsure and sad, then go home feeling better having share notes with another participant and finding they have alternative. Volunteering is fun, you develop friends with the other volunteers and you make the participant feel better about themselves."
"My favorite memory of my 20 years with LGFB occurred Christmas 2018 when a friend from my Dragon Boat days was in palliative care. She had no family in Canada and was quite depressed, especially at the holiday time. She had never attended LGFB so I asked her nurse if it would be something she could do or would like to do. She came to life at the session. She had lots of jokes for the participants and the volunteers. She looked wonderful when she was finished. We took some picture of her and printed them out for her to send to her few cousins in Germany. She was very tired when she was back in her bed but her joy in being part of the program gave all of us tremendous Christmas spirit.
As volunteers, we all feel we get more from the program than we give. It is always such a good feeling when we are done our session (and we have had a lot of fun, too.)"
"Being able to volunteer with Look Good Feel Better is truly an honour. There are many special moments during each workshop that truly touch my heart. Sometimes this might include a huge smile radiating from a participant after their makeup is done, or hearing the precious sound of cancer patients laughing together. It is a lot more than makeup and wigs, it is a coming together and sense of community that feels quite magical.
Our volunteers are kind, caring, special people and together they form an amazing team. They are lovely to be with. Their warmth radiates from the minute they enter the room. Not only do they look after the cancer patients but also they are supportive of each other. I have benefited from their incredible support. When I had cancer, I felt their care as I experienced a workshop as a cancer patient myself. My third time with cancer, the team starting arriving early and all helped to setup the workshop with me, as I was tired going through treatments. Their kindness and true teamwork allowed me to continue volunteering in an incredibly supportive place during a difficult time in my life. When you have cancer, little acts of kindness seem almost magnified and unforgettable and life altering. Ther help, the sense of community and caring, is something I will never forget. Being able to volunteer with such amazing women is an honour. I can't say enough about how wonderful Look Good Feel Better is. It is an uplifting, amazing place to volunteer. Thank you who are involved in making these workshops happen!"
"I am pleased to be nominated as a volunteer at LGFB. We have been a very active and close group here in Sarnia for many years. There are many moments to remember over the years but each workshop is a new experience with it's own character. The one constant is the smiles and lively conversation that emerges as the workshops progress.
As a volunteer, that is the most rewarding part of the day. If asked, I would encourage anyone thinking of volunteering to do so. They will not be disappointed."
“It has been an honour to be nominated for volunteering with such a wonderful program. I have met so many inspiring women through the 20 years with this program, which I take pride in being a part of. When we had the Look Good Feel Better tour bus, we had a beautiful young girl who was graduating from grade 8 attend the workshop. She was delighted with her new make up and came back to see me in her prom dress to show me! She sure was an inspiration like so many woman I have met over the years. It does my heart good to know I made someone smile!
When you volunteer, you get back so much more than you give and if we made even one persons day, it is more than worth it! I always hope that how I made someone feel will be just what they needed!”
"My favourite memories are watching the participants throughout the workshop. As they start smiling, talking and asking questions. In the end exchanging emails and connecting with other women experiencing a similar diagnoses.
Being a volunteer is rewarding.... the smiles tell you that you provided, emotional and social support in your community. You leave these women with courage, confidence and connection."
"During the workshop, we usually help one or two participants which allows us to be one on one with then and see their transformation while we are going through the steps. Each participant is a new challenge and I have enjoyed them all. This is the reason we all stay with this program for many years. This program is so satisfying."
"My favorite memory in my time as a volunteer cannot be put in one moment! I think the love and laughter we experience at each and every one at our workshops are what make them so special. I have an incredible team that truly give it their all every month and we always have one goal in mind and that is to make them smile! (actually laughter at our workshops is usually a given). This program is so absolutely fulfilling in so many ways and I can truly say I leave a better person each and every month. To be able to give back a couple of hours of time to these women who are already going through is an absolute pleasure."
"There is one memory that really stands out for me. We had just finished our workshop and where getting ready to wrap things up when I glanced to the back of the room where I was surprised to see a participant sitting with tears streaming down her face. When I approached her to offer comfort she explained that these where tears of joy, she was totally overwhelmed and grateful that there was an organization such as our available to help her on her journey with cancer. Volunteering with LGFB has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It's not everyday that you get an opportunity to instill pride, self confidence, and joy in another person ! What a privilege it is to see the magic transformation of our participants."
